Here are some sample Duolingo Speaking Topics and Sample Questions about your favourite subject. There can be two or more parts of the question as given in the examples below.

Q1. What was your favourite subject at school? Do you think this subject has a good scope in the future?

[Take note of how the question is asked. If the question is asked in the past tense, it means that you need to relate a past experience. For that, you will also use the past tense. For example, in the above question, the first part of the question has been asked in the past tense. Therefore its answer is also in the past tense.]

Answer:

“Learning English language has always been an interesting activity for me so I would say English was my favourite subject at school. Initially I was only inspired by the colourful English story books that were read to us in the school. Even English text books were filled with interesting pictures and illustrations to make the lessons engaging for the young students. Therefore, for me, English as a subject was not cumbersome rather it was the easiest, most interesting part of the curriculum.

I would rather admit that as I moved up the grades,  English became a little difficult since I had to learn some difficult contents of the syllabus like English Grammar, essay writing and comprehension exercises etc. But I still considered it an easier subject as compared to mathematics or physics which contained no fun part but only serious focus and hand work.

For the future prospects or scope of English language, I would say that it is very rewarding to learn English language as a subject. We can say that it is the basis of all modern knowledge. Since language is the tool through which we learn other subjects, it is mandatory to have a good command on English language. Whether you pick e-commerce, science, business, media, or any other field, you will first need a language tool to study it and that tool is always English. Besides, it is an international language. Whatever country you go to, you can expect people to understand you as long as you are speaking English. That is why I would say that English as a subject has great value which cannot be undermined.”

Q2. What was your favourite subject as a student? Why do you think this subject is important and one should study it?

[This question is the same as the first question in this post. This is the example of how you can answer this question if your favourite subject is mathematics.]

Answer:

“Mathematics has always been my favourite subject. I understand that for many students it is the subject they only despise but for me it has always been interesting. The biggest reason for liking mathematics at school was that I had a natural tendency towards learning mathematics. The formulas, numbers and diagrams always inspired me.

I know that it was not everyone’s cup of tea and only the most intelligent and hardworking students excel in maths. For this reason, I felt more confident and competitive when I performed well in this subject. Another reason for liking mathematics was my teacher. He made this subject fun for us. For example, he would use math games and visuals to teach us math. He was also very supportive and encouraged us to reach out to him for any problems we were having in his subject.

Besides these reasons, there are a number of reasons why you should study maths. First of all studying mathematics will make you a problem solver. For example, maths helps me work out how long it will take me to get somewhere if I know the distance I have to travel and the speed I’m going. It develops critical thinking and logical reasoning in you . Maths also supports or provides the basis for other subjects like accounting, business, computer sciences, architecture or life sciences.

For example, without mathematical calculations, engineers cannot design buildings and even furniture stores cannot design basic home items. In fact, maths and numbers works in our daily life. That is why it is very important to learn math since it helps us understand the world around us and helps us solve various problems independently.”
